GLOSSARY

The terms and definitions below are always evolving, transforming and often mean diverse things to different people. They are provided below as a starting indicate for discussion and kind. This Glossary has been collectively built and created by the staff members of the LGBTQIA Resource Center since the preliminary s.

These are not universal definitions. This glossary is provided to help provide others a more thorough but not entirely comprehensive understanding of the significance of these terms. You may even consider asking someone what they intend when they use a term, especially when they use it to portray their identity. Ultimately it is most important that each individual define themselves for themselves and therefore also define a designation for themselves.

For many people who are fresh to the LGBTQIA+ collective, this acronym can look confusing or overwhelming. 

If you are new, welcome! We’re so glad you’re here with us today. 

And if you aren’t new to the community, but are curious to learn more about how the society has changed over the years, we’re delighted you’ve joined us today, too. 

The way the LGBTQIA+ collective interacts – both with each other and with the world around us – is constantly switching. We strive to contain everyone and to produce everyone feel seen and understood. 

What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?

For many years, the umbrella term “gay” was used to describe the community. 

Now, many people worry about how to come out, but coming out before the s wasn’t even an option, as many states illegalized what they called “homosexuality” or “sodomy.” There was also no acronym at all, restricting the inclusivity of our community.

A

Abro (sexual and romantic)

A pos used to narrate people who contain a fluid sexual and/or romantic orientation which changes over time, or the course of their life. They may use different terms to describe themselves over time.

Ace

An umbrella term used specifically to describe a lack of, varying, or occasional experiences of sexual attraction. This encompasses asexual people as adv as those who identify as demisexual and grey-sexual. Ace people who trial romantic attraction or occasional sexual attraction might also exploit terms such as gay, bi, queer woman , straight and gay in conjunction with asexual to explain the direction of their romantic or sexual attraction.

Ace and aro/ace and aro spectrum

Umbrella terms used to describe the wide group of people who trial a lack of, varying, or occasional experiences of love-related and/or sexual attraction, including a lack of attraction. People who identify under these umbrella terms may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including, but not limited to, asexual, ace,

LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, fluid, transgender, queer, plus other sexual orientations and gender identities.

There are many ways you may observe this written, but the most common are currently LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIAP+.

The Government estimates million people or 6% of the population identify as lesbian, gay or bi in the UK. It is estimated that , people, or 1% of the population, identify as trans in Fantastic Britain. However, it is likely that the true numbers are far greater than this, as many are not yet content being open about their sexuality and gender identity.

For those who have had very little interaction with the community, you may not know what a lot of these sexual orientations and gender identities are or signify, so let's try to facilitate you understand.

With all of these terms, you should never suppose someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Please do not cite to people using these words unless they have told you how they identify and they have given you permission.
