Church of christ and gay marriage

United Church of Christ endorses lgbtq+ marriage

The United Church of Christ’s rule-making body voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve a resolution that endorses same-sex marriage, making it the largest Christian denomination to do so.

The vote is not binding on individual churches, but could cause some churches to leave the fold.

Roughly 80 percent of the members of the church’s General Synod voted to approve the resolution. They debated for about an hour before voting.

On Sunday, a committee of about 50 United Church of Christ representatives gave nearly unanimous approval to the resolution, recommending that the General Synod validate it. It was supported by the UCC’s president, John H. Thomas.

Traditionally strong in New England, the liberal denomination of million members has long been supportive of gays and lesbians.

Gender-specific definition rebuffed
The committee also voted against an alternative resolution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. A small community of conservative congregations had proposed that amendment, and suggested that approval of gay mar

The Case Against Christians Attending a Gay Wedding

The case against Christians attending a gay wedding is relatively straightforward. We can lay out the case in three premises and a conclusion.

The Argument

Premise 1: Lgbtq+ “marriage” is not marriage.

No matter what a government may sanction, the biblical definition of marriage (see Gen. –25, Mal. –15, Matt. –6; Eph. –33) involves a man and a woman. I won’t belabor the point, because I assume in this post that I’m speaking to those who accept with the Westminster Confession of Faith when it says, “Marriage is to be between one guy and one woman” (WCF ). Gay “marriage” is not only an offense to God—sanctioning a gentle of sexual activity that the Bible condemns (Lev. ; ; Rom. –27; 1 Cor. –10; 1 Tim. –10)—gay “marriage” does not actually exist.

Premise 2: A gay wedding celebrates and solemnizes a lie.

Whether the service is done in a church or in a reception hall, whether it is meant to be a Christian service or a secular commitment ceremony, a lgbtq+ wedding declares what is false to be right and calls evil good.

Stances of Faiths on LGBTQ+ Issues: Church of God in Christ

The Church of God in Christ, a largely African-American denomination with million members, has traditionally established no formal policy about the issues that affect queer, lesbian, bisexual, gender diverse and queer people.

But, as in other Pentecostal denominations, it has long been clear that the church condemns homosexuality. And in , church leaders articulated that condemnation in a rare expression against marriage equality for gay, woman loving woman and bisexual couples.

It has, to hang out, remained silent on transgender members.

On Marriage Equality

Marriage, according to the Church of God in Christ, is for procreation only. Ignoring the fact that millions of gay and lesbian people are, in fact, raising children through a variety of means, the church asserts that only heterosexual couples should be entitled to unite. Its April expression, “Marriage: A Proclamation to the Church of God in Christ Worldwide,” states:

Marriage between male and female provide the structure for conceiving and raising children. Compliance

Same-Sex Attraction

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints acknowledges that same-sex attraction is a sensitive issue that requires kindness, empathy and understanding. The “Same-Sex Attraction” section of reinforces the reality that, in the words of one Latter-day Saint scripture, God “loveth his children” (1 Nephi ), and seeks to help everyone improve understand same-sex attraction from a gospel perspective.

The Church does not take a position on the generate of same-sex attraction. In , Elder Dallin H. Oaks said, “The Church does not have a position on the causes of any of these susceptibilities or inclinations, including those related to same-gender attraction.”

Feelings of same-sex attraction are not a sin. President M. Russell Ballard said: “Let us be clear: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes that ‘the experience of same-sex attraction is a complex existence for many people. The attraction itself is not a sin, but acting on it is. Even though individuals do not choose to have such attractions, they do decide how to respond to them. With love an
