Gay Fad Studios produced hand painted glassware throughout the &#;s &#; &#;s and painted several patterns for Anchor Hocking&#;s Fire-King glassware. I fell in love with that adorable Peach Blossom mug and that started yet another new pattern to assemble. I am very alert to hand wash all of these as I have seen lots of faded and scratched Fire-King at flea markets.

Many companies took record of Fran’s achievement and adopted the moniker “Gay” to label any decorated glassware of the time. Artists favor Fred Press and Georges Briard entered the industry in the mid s, undeniably influenced by Gay Fad’s artistry and the growing popularity of midcentury cocktail culture. But as Gay Fad’s popularity grew, trouble was brewing. Socioeconomic bias created a challenging environment for Gay Fad in their final years of operation. A domino effect of product outsourcing issues, contract ambiguity, and intellectual property theft occurred.

First, Gay Fad's newest national sales rep partner didn't fulfill the sales Gay Fad relied upon. The lack of sales created problematic conditions for Gay Fad and Fran looked for additional revenue sources. Secondly, outsourcing items presented quality regulate issues. This led to canceled fulfillment contracts and additional loss of sales. But, the third circumstance may hold been the most difficult of them all.

History of Gay Fad Studios and Fran Taylor: Original Designs on Anchor Hocking and Other Blanks

I recently came across a beautiful shot glass with white stripes and gold stars. There was an anchor stamped on the bottom, and the side of the glass had a little signature that read &#;Gay Fad.&#; Immediately, I recognized the anchor as being the symbol of the Anchor Hocking glassware organization. But &#;Gay Fad&#;? That was a bit more puzzling.

This little marking sent me down the rabbit hole of all rabbit holes. There are tons of vintage items for sale online that tout the Gay Fad name. But there isn&#;t a lot of information on what Gay Fad actually was.

So this post is an attempt to combine the available info on Gay Fad into a brief history of the company.

What is Gay Fad?

Gay Fad was a major glass decorating business that started in Detroit and ran from . In that concise 7 year period, they produced many designs that are now well-known and recognizable.
