Day 1: Sunny Nelson
We begin in cheerful Nelson, at the northern suggestion of the South Island. This pleasant fishing port and crafts community gets more sunlight than any other identify in New Zealand and offers a friendly introduction to local hospitality during our two-night stay.
Linger over coffee at a sidewalk cafe. Browse in the galleries. Hikers will love The Center of New Zealand Amble , which departs right from town with spectacular views of the bay. Not surprisingly, Auckland also has the largest LGBTQ+ scene in the country, with much of it centered downtown on hip and arty Karangahape Road (just K Road to locals) and Ponsonby Road. Auckland Identity, held every February, is the country's largest. Auckland is sometimes called the "City of Sails" thanks to the large number of sailboats always on view in its gorgeous harbor—making good use of the country's warmest and sunniest urban climate.
